Ufford Park Spring May Bank Holiday Charity Golf

Golf competition helps to raise over £1000 in aid of the endangered Suffolk Punch Horse

Yesterday (Monday 31st May 2021), Ufford Park Hotel  Golf & Spa  helped to raise over £1000 and awareness for the very endangered breed of horse, The Suffolk Punch. With approximately 500 of this breed left world-wide, our owner, Colin Aldous, wanted to be able to help raise some money for his beautiful breed, as every living Suffolk Punch horse can trace it’s male blood line back to one stallion “Crisps Horse of Ufford” born in 1768, in the village of Ufford.

Charity golf event takes place at top Suffolk Golf Course

On Spring Bank Holiday Monday, Ufford Park Woodbridge hosted the first ‘Suffolk Punch Trophy’ golf competition to help raise funds for the Suffolk Punch horse.

The event, founded by owner and keen golfer, Colin Aldous, attracted elite golfers from across Suffolk to play two rounds at the award-winning 18-hole, par 71 course, nestled in the Suffolk countryside.

Ufford Park has previously hosted various prestigious golf tournaments including, The Rett Classic, Best Western National Seniors and Sky Televised Euro Pro Tour.

Colin said, ‘Back in 2019, we felt the time was right to introduce a new annual golf competition, and after significant research and consideration, we decided on a Regional Annual Order of Merit event, which could support an appropriate charity.

We managed to secure sponsorship from six local companies; AllGlass (Anglia) Ltd, Foskett Farms, GAH, Humphreys Removals, Hopkins Homes, and the Tru7 Group, all of which have strong connections with the village of Ufford. However, COVID-19 forced a twelve-month delay, but we are very grateful that the generous sponsors have been retained.

My wife and myself were raised in rural Suffolk and both of our fathers were full-time Suffolk Horseman, working the land before tractors started to dominant around the 1950’s.

Ufford Park had the opportunity to support the “Suffolk Horse” by sponsoring a foal at The Suffolk Punch Trust, which like every other living Suffolk Horse could trace its pedigree back to Crisps Horse born in Ufford in 1768. Unfortunately, our foal died prematurely, however, this new event creates another opportunity to support this endangered rare breed and Suffolk icon.’

The event was held on Monday 31st May 20201 and was open to golfers with a maximum Handicap index limit 9.0.

A presentation took place in the evening and trophies and prize money were awarded to the both the scratch and nett winners, plus vouchers for the overall top five places and best AM/PM rounds.

Best Gross score and winner of the Gold Suffolk Punch Trophy was Teddy Hall from Bury St Edmunds Golf Club. He shot gross scores of 77 and 75 for a total winning score of 152 over 36 holes.

Best Nett score and winner of the Silver Suffolk Punch Trophy was Fraser Johnson from Ufford Park Golf Club. He shot nett scores of 71 and 74 for a total winning score of 145 over 36 holes

A donation from each entry fee has been collected to support both The Suffolk Punch Trust and The Suffolk Horse Society.

“We are always looking for new ways to promote this critically endangered breed of horse, so we were delighted when asked to attend The Suffolk Punch Trophy Golf Tournament with a Suffolk horse. The continued support Ufford Park has shown us, and of course the Suffolk horse in general, is truly overwhelming and we could not continue our work without your help. Thank you.” said Tracey Pettit, The Suffolk Punch Trust.

John Fleming from The Suffolk Horse Society said: “We are so very grateful to Ufford Park and Colin Aldous for arranging this golf event in aid of the Suffolk Punch horse. The Suffolk Punch has come ‘home’ today as back in 1768 Ufford was discovered as the birth place for this breed of horse.” The Suffolk Horse Society is the official charity for the preservation and promotion of the Suffolk Punch Horse.

Suffolk hotel owner is a finalist in top local business award

Tarnia Robertson, managing director of Ufford Park Hotel, Golf and Spa was named a finalist in the Director of the Year category at the Suffolk Business Awards on Tuesday November 17th.

The Suffolk Business Awards aim to recognise the most successful businesses in Suffolk. The awards take place every year but due to the pandemic, winners were announced via social media this year rather than at an awards ceremony.

In response to being shortlisted for this award, Tarnia said: “The hospitality industry has been one of the hardest hit by the pandemic, so the last few months have been particularly tough, but the support we have received so far has been incredible.

“I cannot thank everyone enough for their support and positivity over these last few months.

“Without my amazing team of employees, I would never have been shortlisted in this award, so I owe it to them.”

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the second national lockdown meant that Ufford Park had to close its doors to the public once again. The hotel does however remain open for those who have to travel for work purposes, key workers including NHS staff and vulnerable groups.

Tarnia continued: “We can’t wait until we can open our doors again in December.”

Ufford Park, Hotel, Golf and Spa is currently operating in line with Government guidelines. For more information about membership, events or bookings, please visit their website: uffordpark.co.uk

Celebrations at Ufford Park

25 glorious years of Ufford Park Hotel

Ufford Park Hotel, Golf and Spa celebrates its Silver Jubilee

Ufford Park Hotel is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year having opened its doors in April 1992.  This unique hotel is set in 120 acres of historic parkland in Suffolk’s most beautiful, peaceful countryside, Ufford Park is just minutes from the county’s heritage coast and a mere ten miles from the bustling county town of Ipswich.  It is a unique venue with a unique history and there will be a range of 25th Anniversary celebrations taking place over the course of 2017.

The parkland in which today’s hotel stands was, around one hundred years ago, the grounds of a mansion called ‘Ufford Place’, a building that was demolished by a fire later on in the mid-twentieth century.  The very old specimen trees had reached the end of their life at that time and were then cleared to allow arable farming to take place.  All that remains of the original manor house is the Victorian Lodge at the entrance to the current hotel grounds.

In 1991, Shirley and Colin Aldous, parents of Ufford Park’s current Managing Director Tarnia Robertson, took over the stalled development of what was to become known as Ufford Park.  They invested their own money into the scheme, along with another local entrepreneur, and the Ufford Park Hotel opened its doors the following year.

Key dates in the development of the hotel:

·         1992: Door opened to guests

·         1997: The first major extension of the original hotel was undertaken with seventeen additional bedrooms and an extension to the gym, dance studio built.

·         1998: The Vista and Waveney function or dining rooms were added.

·         2005: Ufford Park’s complex was doubled in size to its current ninety bedrooms, along with a new retail golf super store, two-storey driving range and an increased function capacity to accommodate 300 guests.

·         2007: A Thermal Suite Spa comprising a 5-metre central Hydro pool and associated steam and sauna experiences were created in the spa.

·         2015: The gym was extended to include a free weight area

·         2015-2017: Bedroom refurbishment programme ongoing with two-thirds of the ninety bedrooms now fully modernised.

·         2016: Transformational refurbishment of the Park Restaurant.

While the original building has grown beyond recognition, dedicated maintenance of the surrounding parkland has ensured the preservation of its natural beauty, and it is now enjoyed by golfers who play on the award-winning, 18-hole, par 71 parkland golf course.

Last year’s launch of the adventure golf course, Congo Rapids Lost World introduced a new generation to Ufford Park adding another great reason to visit.

Tarnia Robertson became Managing Director in April 2015.  She said: “We couldn’t be prouder of the past twenty-five years, or more grateful to the guests who have visited, and whose support has helped us shape what we’ve become.  Here’s to the next twenty-five years!”

Special anniversary promotions will be available during April and will be publicised via our social media channels so keep an eye out for them

Captains Charity Cheque For EACH

Ufford Park’s Golf Club Captains, Barry Heaney and Dianne Clarke, were very proud to handover a donation to the East Anglian Children’s Hospice this week.   The donation total was £3,500 and was raised over 52 weeks with the help of the golf club members through raffles, sweepstakes, collection pots and a very well-attended Captains Charity Day on 22nd May 2016.

Every year the Captains nominate a charity to raise money for over their time in charge, and this year both current Captains opted for the local children’s charity, EACH.

Hannah Walker of EACH said: “EACH relies on voluntary donations to fund services for children, young people and their families living with life-threatening conditions.  That’s why we are very grateful to Ufford Park for this much-needed support.”

Ufford Park Hotel, Golf & Spa supports a number of local, regional and national charities throughout the year.

2016 Disabled British Open

On Thursday 15th September, James Hourigan won the 2016 Disabled British Open at Ufford Park Golf Club.  Launched in 2009, the Disabled British Open Golf Championships welcomed competitors from all over the world to take part in what most considered being one of the "majors" within disability golf tournaments worldwide. Hourigan, a bilateral amputee from Dublin came in with 54 Stableford points over the 2 days.

The event welcomes male, female and junior golfers with a wide range of disabilities and golf handicaps to compete together in tournament conditions. There is a maximum handicap of 28 for gentlemen and 36 for ladies, however, for all wheelchair golfers and blind golfers the maximum handicap is 36 and 45 respectively.

Disabled British Open background:

The Disabled British Open started in 2007 in the Surrey/Sussex area promoted by the BBC golf commentator and former professional  Peter Allis.

It required lots of sponsorship to run in the chosen format. Leading players were invited from the various disabled golf groups in the UK. Hence leading one-armed golfers, leg amputee golfers, blind golfers and wheelchair golfers who play from special adapted electric buggies competed alongside and against each other. This was the only pan-disability golf event on the annual circuit.

However, the heavy finance required was not sustainable and it folded a few years later.

In 2014 it was re-formatted by The Handigolf Foundation using all volunteer support. What was needed was moderate finance from The R&A that was to be directed to the disabled players themselves to help out with accommodation, green fees and the cost of Trophies and prizes. A venue with a wheelchair accessible hotel with other activities for non-playing partners and a good golf course was also essential.

Ufford Park Golf Club has met the requirements needed for the last 3 years. The hotel is fully accessible and excellent value for money with very adaptable dining, meeting and recreational facilities. The golf course is challenging for these leading players who would be at The Paralympics if Disabled Golf had been added to the Games alongside able-bodied golf at Rio 2016 Olympics.

The swimming pool, health spa, double-decker driving range and "Congo Rapids" crazy-golf course provide excellent alternatives to the main golf event for the non-playing guests of the players.

A "playing assistant" who acts as Caddy is needed for each group over the 2 completion days. These are obtained from the Senior and Junior club members at the thriving golf club on a fully volunteer basis. The players really appreciate the local golfing knowledge from these Ufford Park players.

It is hoped that the event is now on a more stable footing and continue in future years.

CONGO RAPIDS LOST WORLD ADVENTURE

GOLF OPENS AT UFFORD PARK

A crashed plane, a giant dinosaur claw, a lost temple and a volcano are just some features of the new, unique Suffolk attraction A new Florida-style adventure golf course, Congo Rapids Lost World, is now open to the general public. Situated within the grounds of Ufford Park Hotel, Woodbridge, the 18-hole course offers outdoor fun in a mystical setting for adults and children of all ages. The 1800m² site is enclosed by secure fencing and is within easy reach of all the facilities at the Ufford Park Hotel. There is ample car parking onsite and all players are welcome to visit the hotel’s drinking and dining areas before or after playing - these are always open to non-members.

Construction was managed by Adventure Golf experts Moore Adventure Ltd, which already operates a successful Adventure Golf course in Norwich, Norfolk called Congo Rapids, but this is the first of its kind to be opened in Suffolk. Adventure Golf is different from mini golf or crazy golf as it offers more physical interaction at some of the course holes, and it also offers a more dramatic setting for the players to enjoy. The journey starts on a self-propelled boat across the first of the water lagoons. Players visit the scene of a Congo Jungle plane crash as they play the first 5 holes – beware the cannibal cooking pot! They will encounter a tiger, a 4-metre tall giraffe and many other animals. They pass through the abandoned temple and ride on a raft into the Lost World where they will be greeted by life-sized dinosaurs. A menacing T-Rex looks on as they play beside an erupting volcano and a 5-metre tall brachiosaurus waits for them just beyond by the 13th hole, before they head onwards through a giant dinosaur claw. Players can then return back through the Congo jungle into the African village and have the chance for some last photos to include a panoramic view of the course. They then exit through the jungle harbour to the sounds of jungle beat music.

David Moore, of Moore Adventure Ltd said: “We’re looking forward to sharing this experience with individuals, groups of all ages and from all walks of life. We will be open 10am until 9pm (last admission 8pm), 7 days a week, and 364 days a year. Our hope is that players will come and enjoy it all year round.

” Tarnia Robertson of Ufford Park Hotel said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Congo Rapids Lost World is ready for our guests and the general public to experience. It’s a genuinely unique new  attraction for Suffolk and we look forward to welcoming players into the hotel for refreshments before or after they play.”

Admission Prices: £8 Adult (16 and over), £5.75 Child (15 and under), £22 Family of 4 (including up to 2 adults), £26 Family of 5 (including up to 2 adults). Group discounts are available and children’s birthday parties can be arranged in conjunction with Ufford Park Hotel. Children under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult. There is no need to book in advance (unless you’re coming as a party) just turn up and play! For regular updates and news, follow on social media: Facebook: "Congo Rapids Lost World Adventure Golf", Twitter: @CongoRapids_LW or visit the Congo Rapids website (www.congorapids.co.uk).

Tarnia Celebrates.......

TARNIA ROBERTSON CELEBRATES ONE YEAR

AT THE HELM OF UFFORD PARK

Tarnia Robertson is celebrating her 1st Anniversary as Managing Director at Ufford Park Woodbridge Hotel, Golf and Spa. Tarnia assumed the role when her parents, Colin and Shirley Aldous, retired last year. Her first year has been a very busy one and real progress has been made in terms of modernising the hotel with the completion of the latest phase of bedroom refurbishment. Tarnia said: “The bedrooms are just part of what I have planned for the coming months and years, but our thinking in terms of the bedrooms was driven by our desire to meet our customers’ needs, and by a recognition that our customers stay with us for a variety of reasons. Sometimes their bedroom needs to be an ‘office’ space as well as a space for them to kick back and relax. We’ve ensured that the design in our newly decorated rooms works on both levels, and that guests have all the supporting features they need including additional plug sockets and USB ports to charge mobile phones, tablets and other technology.” One third of Ufford Park’s 90 bedrooms have now been extensively refurbished since December 2014 amounting to an investment by the hotel of over £220,000, and the latest phase, which began in January this year, involved the refurbishment of a further eight Classic bedrooms and two Superior bedrooms. Tarnia continued: “The response from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive, and we hope to be able to announce the beginning of phase four next January 2017 when we have plans to fully refurbish a further 27 more bedrooms and bathrooms this time. Over the next 6-8 months we also plan to continue slowly modernising our public areas too. So watch this space …..’’ Tarnia’s vision for the business also extends beyond the traditional areas it is known for. A planning application has recently been approved for a new adventure golf course to be constructed within Ufford Park’s grounds. The course, being created by Moore Adventure, is set to open in advance of the school summer holidays this year, and it is to be named Congo Rapids Lost World. It is the first of its kind planned within Suffolk. Tarnia said of the new attraction: “We are very excited at the prospect of opening such a fabulous new family attraction within our grounds. It will make for a great day out and can be combined with our new Little Adventurers’ children’s menu which is now available in our dining areas all day. We hope that players will stay and enjoy something to eat or drink with us when they come. The course will also appeal to couples and other groups of friends of all ages. All our facilities are open to nonmembers so everyone is made welcome at Ufford Park.” Tarnia’s ambition to share Ufford Park with a new generation is clear, as well as her desire to continue providing the highest quality of customer service to its very loyal customers who have been coming back for many years.

Juniors at Ufford Park

JUNIOR EASTER MEDAL

On Tuesday 5th April, the juniors of Ufford Park congregated for their annual Easter competition. This was Max McGreal’s first competition as the new Junior Captain and although he wasn’t present, there was still a decent size field. On a relatively still and sunny day, there were good scores to be had and this was definitely taken advantage of.  Harry Fricker managed to beat the chasing pack with a very impressive nett 67, with his brother George following up closely in second with an equally impressive score of nett 69. Rounding up the top three places was Kamiar Azvine, who mustered up a solid score of nett 70 which left him taking a share of the spoils. Running alongside this medal, was the 28+ handicappers medal competition, which was won by Rayan Semnani, who shot 10 under his handicap of 36. The runner-up was Fraser Johnson, who played to his handicap of 32 scoring nett 71.

Stuart appointed to the Board of Directors

Stuart Robertson becomes non-executive member of the board

Stuart Robertson, Ufford Park’s Director of Golf, has been appointed as a new non-executive member of the board of directors at Ufford Park Hotel.  In his new role, he will be responsible for presenting a report to each board meeting covering industry trends both locally and nationally, as well as reporting on the condition of Ufford Park’s 18-hole golf course.  This will include any plans to improve either the course or the golf centre itself in terms of the driving range, membership and Pay and Play (visitors).

Stuart has been a member of the Ufford Park team since it opened for business in 1992.  That year he completed his training as a qualified PGA professional from Fynn Valley Golf Club in Ipswich and he established The Doctorgolf Academy at Ufford Park soon afterwards.  He is highly experienced and is generally regarded as one of the best golf teachers in East Anglia.  Stuart and his team teach everyone from 4-5 year olds looking to have their very first lesson, through the Junior Academy, right through to vastly experienced scratch golfers.

Stuart said of his appointment: “I am honoured to have been appointed as a director on Ufford Park’s board.  I look forward to sharing my passion for golf with the board, and to contributing in any way I can to the ongoing success of Ufford Park as a world-class hotel, spa and golf course.”

Stuart was nominated at Ufford Park’s last board meeting in January 2016 and his appointment now takes immediate effect.

New Captains Drive In......

Captains Drive In 2016

On Saturday 12th March, our Ufford Park Captains officially drove into the club.

2016 Club Captain Barry Heaney, Ladies Captain Dianne Clarke and Junior Captain Max McGreal were greatly supported by their fellow members of the club. In usual Ufford Park tradition, the Captains drove off from the Yellow tees and their yardage was recorded for the sweepstake, with all proceedings going to the Captains Charities for 2016. Barry and Dianne have both chosen the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices as their selected charity for the year.

Once the Captains were underway, a team event kicked off in a best 2 out of 4 stableford score competition and although it was a cold and blustery day, the course was definitely scoreable. The team containing Paul Jordan, Brian Clarke, Brenda Taylor and Dennis Bryant won on countback with an impressive score of 91 points, narrowly beating the runners up, John Dove, Steve Westall, Sam Ward and Michael Catling. In third place and also just missing out on the first place prize was the group comprising of Wendy Hayes, Tony Boffey, Richie Taylor and Dan Felgate who mustered up a score of 90 points.

One of the highlights of the day was the hole-in-one on the 10th hole by Richard Harper. Needless to say his team were at the halfway hut getting their free drinks in as quick as they could!

The day was rounded up with dinner and a raffle raising money for the captain’s new charity.

News from Ufford........

ADVENTURE GOLF COMES TO UFFORD PARK IN A NEW ‘LOST WORLD’

A new adventure golf course for families and groups of all ages is proposed, subject to planning application approval

Ufford Park Hotel has submitted a planning application, in partnership with adventure golf experts Moore Adventure, for a new, Florida-style, adventure golf course to be built within Ufford Park’s 120 acres of historic parkland near Woodbridge, Suffolk.

If the application is successful, the course will be open in advance of the school summer holidays 2016, and it is to be named Congo Rapids Lost World.

Moore Adventure already operates a successful adventure golf course in Norwich, Norfolk called Congo Rapids but this is the first of its kind planned within Suffolk.  Adventure golf is different from mini golf or crazy golf as it offers more physical interaction at some of the course holes, and it also offers a more dramatic setting for the players to enjoy.

Tarnia Robertson of Ufford Park Hotel said: “We are very excited at the prospect of opening such a fabulous new family attraction within our grounds, and we are hopeful of a positive outcome from the planning application.”

The decision from Suffolk Coastal District Council’s planning department is expected within the next two months, and if approved construction will get underway in Spring 2016.

Turkey Trot 2015

On Sunday 6th December 2015, the Ufford Park members arrived for the annual Turkey Trot competition. Mulled wine and mince pies were handed out to all the members on the first tee by this year’s Club Captains, Val Moon and Dave Ellis.

In the windy and wintery conditions, everyone got underway in a best two out of four scores competition. The stand out team of the day was that consisting of Sharon Wright, Colin Fulton, Steve Westall and Chris Smith, with an outstanding score of 91 stableford points, seven points ahead of the rest of the field. The runners up were the team comprising of Gill Till, Neil MacDonald, Steve Harland and Jack Heaney, with a solid score of 84 stableford points, narrowly pipping third place by a point. Up-and-coming 2016 Club Captains, Dianne Clarke and Barry Heaney, current Club Captain, Dave Ellis and Rob Keeble made up the top three places with a score of 83 stableford points.

The day was followed by a raffle, dinner and the prize presentation, and it was a good day had by all.

Fred Olsen Foursomes 2015

On a bitter cold day, with blustery conditions, Sam Ward, Paul Jordan, Simon Severwright and Jack Heaney arrived to play the final of the Fred Olsen Foursomes. With all players playing off fairly similar handicaps, the match was evenly poised up until the 7th hole, where Simon and Jack made par and proceeded to make another two par’s on the 8th and 9th holes to take a 3UP lead through 9 holes. They then pulled away from Sam and Paul by making par’s on the 11th, 12th and 13th and finishing off with an impressive 6&5 victory.

Ufford Park would like to wish Simon Severwright and Jack Heaney many congratulations on their victory.

System-Matic Cup 2015 - 24th October 2015

Joe Harvey won the 2015 System-Matic Cup on count back ahead of Paul Jordan with a Nett 71. Junior Captain Harry Fricker finished in third place with a Nett 72. The System-Matic Cup is an annual invite only trophy for winners of competitions played over the past 12 months, so the competition was stern.

Joe who started off as a Junior member at Ufford Park around 20 years ago has only just got back into the game with golf falling behind work and other interests.  But he has enjoyed a good spell of results at the club since re-joining and the System-Matic Cup is his first competitive trophy since his return

Barry Stableford

2015 Barry Stableford

On Sunday 6th September, Harry Fricker proved just why he got a call up to the England Golf Regional Trials, by continuing his great run of form with an impressive score of 38 points. After paring every hole on the front 9, he was set for a decent score, which he continued on the back 9, after putting together two birdies and two bogey’s to finish level par of the course. Following up closely in second place was his playing partner Max McGreal who came in with a score of 37 points, after struggling to get off to a good start. In third place and making up the top three was George Fricker, who scored 33 points, but was left disappointed after three double bogey’s hindered his chances of winning the trophy.

Results:

H Fricker 38pts, M McGreal 37, G Fricker 33, L Cleland 32, W Smith 31, A Tripp 29, C Haste 24, A Wright 24, J Goulton 22

Junior Club Championship

2015 Junior Championship

With the cloud set in for the day and a constant flurry of rain, it looked set to be a miserable day for the Ufford Park, 18 hole Junior Club Championships. There were a few times it looked set to be cancelled, due to the amount of rain, however, the greens held out and the tournament proceeded. Scoring conditions were extremely tough, with players struggling to get to grips with the saturated fairways and greens, as well as the continuous driving rain, which led to a couple of players withdrawing from the competition. Nevertheless, the rest of the field battled on to complete their rounds and finish with some fairly respectable scores. There were three players in contention until the 17th hole, where Luke Cleland scored a 9 on the tricky par 4. The other two players were within a shot of each other going down the last hole, but with Alex Tripp unable to get a good tee shot away and eventually getting down in 10, it left George Fricker with a foot putt on the 18th green to claim victory and get his name up on the board for the first time.

Alongside the scratch prize was the Nett prize, which was won by Adam Wright with an impressive score of Nett 69, five shots clear of second place Kamiar Azvine, Nett 74.

Results:

A Wright 93-24-69, K Azvine 96-22-74, W Smith 92-16-76, M Davis 97-17-80, A Tripp 90-7-83, G Fricker 88-4-84, L Cleland 89-5-84, J Cook 106-13-93.

Ufford Park Seniors

Ufford Park Seniors – National Champions

4 members of the Ufford Park Tuesday Club have brought the National Seniors Club Classic Trophy back from Staverton Park to Suffolk with a terrific victory over Bishopswood.

Colin Aldous, Dave Ellis, Alan McMillan & Keith Norton overhauled Nottinghamshire’s Bondhay Golf Club 3-1 in the Semi-Final setting up a clash with Bishopswood in the Final.

The final saw the Hampshire side edging ahead of Ufford Park for much of the match but in the last couple of holes Ufford staged a major comeback to halve the match overall. The two lowest handicappers headed off down the first play-off hole and Alan McMillan managed to halve that. But the second hole proved conclusive and Ufford Park claimed their first victory. Worthy champions and the trophy has headed back to Suffolk for the year.
